If you follow me on Instagram @naturallylajeff you know that I straightened my hair. One person who’s been enjoying the change is my husband–like he has something to do with it! He says I’m like a new woman! Lol!
A few weeks have gone by and since the initial weekend of the straightening I haven’t put any heat in my hair! For the last week, I’ve been wearing two side twists connecting into a ponytail, sometimes hanging down or tucked into a bun. Haven’t had time for much styling? See, textured hair life and straight hair life aren’t have a lot in common.
Anyway, when my husband saw the first flat twist, the first thing he said was, “Uh-oh, the natural is back. It was good while it lasted.” After got off the floor from laughing at his silly tail, I quickly replied that, “Uhh, honey, the natural never left!” Ha!
Straightening ones natural hair has zilch effect on your natural status, unless straightened with the creamy crack. Otherwise you’re just wearing your “natural” hair in a different state. And, as you know, most of the styles that are done on un-straightened natural hair can be done on straightened hair. However, you may not like it as much without the texture you’ve gotten used to. Who saw that coming?
Share with me how you wear your natural hair when it’s straight. How long before you start itching for your kinks or twists back?
Headed to Las Vegas for a few days and initially I was going to do a flat twist style, thinking that loose hair wouldn’t have survived the humidity.
Well, it did and I was so glad to decided to chance it. Equipped with Bobbie pins and a water bottle, I was prepared to create a fallback pinup style if my hair expanded against my will. However, I learned quickly that Las Vegas heat isn’t the humid heat that I expected. But most importantly, I learned that my hair, and yours too, can handle any climate.
In the pictures above I am supremely more pleased with my hair than in pictures taken on previous vacation stints when I was less confident with styling and maintaining my hair.
As with my motivational Monday messages, stay encouraged. This natural hair life gets better and easier with time.
This challenge is confirming a couple of things about myself:
1. When I find something that works, I stick to it.
2. I love to keep it simple. Less is best for me.
Sometimes we naturals feel like we have something to prove. Like we have to have a different hairstyle everyday to display the beauty and versatility of our hair. I can admit that I’ve had thoughts like that. But the fact is that’s not what this natural hair life is about.
The beauty and versatility of our hair is already a proven fact. We can do all kinds of things with our hair with the right products. However, at the end of the day we must remember that it is just hair. You have to do what’s best for you.
So far I’ve been okay with retwisting my hair at night WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT 😁
And when I don’t feel like it, I don’t. It’s those times that knowing what I can do with my hair will come in handy– hence, the reason for this challenge.
Today is a great day! It is the day that that the Lord has made. I shall rejoice and be glad in it!
I’m also pretty happy today because I’m finally wearing this super cute headband I bought a few months ago. I meant to post a picture of this accessory and a few others that I had been waiting for the perfect time to wear but I got distracted.
Accessories are a huge seller for us natural girls. Unfortunately, I’m one of those naturals who excitedly buys them, and then stick them in a drawer to be forgotten about. Hopefully today is the start of changing that habit.
What accessories are you still waiting to wear? Pics please!
In the 2 years that I’ve been natural this is the second wig I’ve bought but the first one that I really liked! The style and color is very flattering. It’s definitely a keeper BUT keep reading to find out why I won’t be wearing this wig long…
1. Too damn convenient! I could easily moisturize my hair, stuff these twists under a wig cap, throw this cute “already styled” hair on my hair and keep it moving.
2. Branding! like to be recognized amongst my circle of friends and associates. The first time I wore this wig was to a function with a bunch of peers from the company I work at. I kid you not, I walked up to a longtime friend and he didn’t even know me! Just before that a woman I work with spoke into my face and had to do a double take before she realized it was me. Long story short, I spent the evening re-introducing myself to people. I felt kind of ridiculous. Cute, but ridiculous. Whether you realize it or not, your regular presentation of yourself becomes your brand. I like my “natural” brand!
3. I LOVE my hair! In all of its uneven, thick, sometimes annoying glory it’s the hair God gave me and I’m embracing it in every stage of this journey.
The most this wig will do for me right now is come in handy for those busy weekends when I don’t have time to do my hair and I want a quick style that can get me through!
So that’s me. Where do wigs fit in your natural hair journey?
