First Loose Natural Hair Challenge

Bed time is where I messed up before with my loose natural hair. I sported a cute Bantu knot out today and now it’s time for bed. Naturally I don’t feel like retwisting tonight. Way too tired for that. So I’m hoping sleeping with a bonnet on will keep it up at least for tomorrow morning.

In fewer hours than I care to realize ill find out.

Didn’t turn out to bad, eh?

How do you maintain your Bantu knots? And what different styles do you do with them?

Day 5: Part 2: Step in the Right

So I decided not to do this next thing myself. More so because I don’t feel like investing the time after having spent the last the 3 wks combing out my locs. Not at the suggestion of my daughter and sister. Plus, there are a few things I leave to the professionals–at least another had other than mine. Chemicals and scissors are amongst the few.

Tomorrow I’m going to see my pre- natural hair beautician to clip my ends. I figured I stand just as good of a chance at it being done correctly with a non-natural beautician as I do a natural beautician. Besides I trusted this same beautician to color my locs three years ago and I’m just as confident that she can clip my ends. Doesn’t really matter to me whether she clips them wet or dry; it just has to be done before I can comfortably go any further with this new journey I’m embarking on.

Here are the results.

In the second pic I look to be disappointed but I wasn’t. Although I know the beautician probably clipped more than she should have, I prefer a professional to do things involving scissors and chemicals.

It’s hair. It’ll grow back. And the more I take care of it–doing less to it–the more it’ll grow.

More to come. Check back often for updates.

Day 5 Un-Loc’d

“OMG! You really didn’t have to cut your off.” That’s the most common reaction of family, friends, and coworkers who are noticing that my locs are gone. So far everyone had heard that it could be done but no one has actually witnessed it.

As for me and this thick mass of hair on my head, I’m at a loss of what to do with it, if I may be honest. Thus far I’ve pulled it into a ponytail and rocked the two French braids, which I liked a lot the first day but I have tired of now.

Full disclosure: this morning I felt a twinge remorse over the ease and convenience of my locs but I quickly reminded myself that every style I did with locs, I can do with my loose natural. It’s just a matter of patience, which I’m a little short on.

Although I’d planned for this stage, I had no idea that my hair would be so friggin thick! It’s been a hassle just getting a comb straight through it, let alone trying to style it.

But I’m no quitter. After all, loose natural hair is what I asked for. Now I’ve got it!

P.S. I temporarily forgot the cardinal rule for rocking loose natural hair: PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS! PRODUCTS! To which I have nothing. Must rectify this ASAP. I’ll check back in a couple days with my progress.

First Hair Washing After Unlocking

Funny it didn’t feel any more exhilarating than washing my hair with locs felt. In the moments before, I’d had great expectations of an orgasmically awesome experience. NOT!

Nevertheless my hair still feels free and fabulous. I hadn’t imagined being this excited about “dealing” with my loose natural hair. The last few weeks of the daunting process of combing them out has been well worth the expended
effort.

It’ll be no wash-n-go this evening. Not so sadly, those days are gone. Tonight I’ll be treating my hair to a detangling shampoo, deep conditioning, and a moisturizing leave-in conditioner. Cream of Nature is my choice brand for this occasion.

Oh yeah. How could I forget blow drying? First time in 4 yrs that I’ll be using blow dryer on my hair.

Obviously my hair is fragile right now coming out of locs after 4 yrs so I figure it’s best to take a gradual approach to handling. Not sure how long it’ll need to strengthen but for the next couple of days I’m just going to enjoy being finished with un-locking process! Spend my days and nights doing something productive–like writing.

Have you or anyone you know traded in locks for loose natural hair? How are you getting along? What are you doing with your hair?
